NANOMEDICINE
A Systems Engineering Approach

edited by Mingjun Zhang (The University of Tennessee, USA) & Ning Xi (Michigan State University, USA)

This book offers a fundamental and comprehensive overview of nanomedicine from a systems engineering perspective, making it the first book in the field of quantitative nanomedicine based on systems theory. It will advance knowledge of nanoscale science and engineering by efficiently employing quantitative tools for fundamental biomedical engineering and biological science research.

The book starts by introducing the concept of nanomedicine, and provides basic mathematical modeling techniques that can be used to model nanoscale biomedical and biological systems. It then demonstrates how this idea can be used to model and analyze the central dogma of molecular biology, tumor growth, and the immune system. Broad applications of the idea are further illustrated by Bayesian networks, multiscale and multiparadigm modeling, and AFM engineering.

This book demonstrates how systems engineering, which has been very successful in conventional engineering, may help with nanomedicine.

  • Nanomedicine: Dynamic Integration of Nanotechnology with Biomedical Science (K-B Lee et al.)
  • Fundamental Mathematical Modeling Techniques for Nano Bio-Systems (S Bewick et al.)
  • A Mathematical Formulation of the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology (R Gao et al.)
  • System Approach to Characterize Living Drosophila Embryos for Biomedical Investigations (Y-T Shen & N Xi)
  • Learning Signaling Pathway Structures (K Sachs & S Itani)
  • Computational Modeling of Tumor Biobarriers: Implications for Delivery of Nano-Based Therapeutics (H B Frieboes et al.)
  • Multiscale-Multiparadigm Modeling and Simulation of Nanometer Scale Systems and Processes for Nanomedical Applications (A Jaramillo-Botero et al.)
  • Game Theoretical Formulation of the Immune System and Inspiration for Controlled Drug Delivery Application (S Bewick et al.)

Readership: Bioengineers, systems engineers and mathematicians.

"Taking a unique, systems perspective, this book not only covers fundamental information on nanomedicine, but also provides an account of modeling, simulation, and experimental tools for dealing with challenges at the interface between nanotechnology and medicine. It is an excellent reference for researchers and students in this burgeoning field."
