We are very pleased to announce that Professor Rachid Yazami has been awarded with the 2012 IEEE Medal for Environmental and Safety Technologies. Prof Yazami is also the Director of Battery Programs, at the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N). He will receive this medal along with Professor John Bannister Goodenough (Virginia H. Cockrell Centennial Chair in Engineering, University of Texas at Austin) and Dr Akira Yoshino (GM, Yoshino Laboratory, Asahi Kasei Corp).
This medal is given for outstanding accomplishments in the application of technology in the fields of interest to IEEE that improve the environment and/or public safety. The award comes with the following citation: "For developing the lithium-ion battery, which enables significant fuel conservation and reduced emissions as power storage for electric vehicles and for smartgrids incorporating renewables."
For nearly a century, the IEEE Awards Program has paid tribute to researchers, inventors, innovators, and practitioners whose exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions have made a lasting impact on technology, society, and the engineering profession. Each year the IEEE Awards Board recommends a small number of outstanding individuals for IEEE's most prestigious honors.
Prof Yazami is the editor of Nanomaterials for Lithium-Ion Batteries: Fundamentals and Applications that will be published in late 2012.
